It was the DarkSide ransomware gang who recently shut down the Colonial pipeline, one of the largest oil pipelines in the U.S. On their website, they posted a statement that seemed to blame the hack on its affiliates and pledged to further vet the criminals with whom they currently do business.

This type of ransomware gangs is not looking to bring down society; they only want your money. Furthermore, they do not want to attack organizations that bring the weight of large governments against them. The gangs only want to attack businesses like yours and like ours, who they believe will pay their ransom.
